The Second G20 Sherpa Meeting issued A Presidency Statement on Climate Change
The Second G20 Sherpa Meeting was convened in Guangzhou, China from 6 to 8 April 2016. As the G20 Presidency, China proposed that G20 members issue a Presidency Statement on Climate Change that focuses on how G20 can take the lead in promoting the implementation of the Paris Agreement, by signing the Agreement on 22 April 2016 when the Agreement will be opened for signature, or thereafter, and by bringing the Paris Agreement into force as soon as possible. This initiative was warmly received and strongly supported by the G20 members. During the Sherpa Meeting, members reached broad agreement on the text of the Statement reflecting their firm political commitment. They believe that the Statement is a significant step to advance international cooperation on climate change by sending a strong signal that the G20 is committed to vigorously implementing the Paris Agreement. This is the first Presidency Statement on climate change issued by the G20 and an important early harvest of Hangzhou Summit to be held in early September.
